SSQ Insurance will add the coverage option of cannabis therapy to its group insurance plans, effective January 1, 2019
“The introduction of this option seeks to meet the needs of its clients for which traditional treatment is not effective, and that, in accordance with the federal regulations governing the access to cannabis for medical purposes “, explained Éric Trudel, senior vice-president, strategies and supply management at SSQ Insurance.
The purchase of cannabis for medical purposes will be subject to certain conditions determined by the insurer. Thus, a prior authorization from SSQ Insurance will be required since the cannabis for medical purposes will only be covered when used to treat or alleviate certain medical conditions refractory to pharmacologic treatments standards.
It mentions neuropathic pain chronic pain related to cancer, spasticity secondary to multiple sclerosis or a spinal cord injury and the nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy.
To be reimbursed, the cannabis for therapeutic purposes will also need to be prescribed by a doctor or nurse and should only be purchased from a licensee’s authorized sale by Health Canada.
Other insurers also reimburse
Desjardins, Manulife and Sun Life Financial have also added a little earlier this year, the coverage for medicinal cannabis to their group insurance plans.
